As a wedding photographer in Connecticut , I have done my fair share of engagement sessions. On top of that I have done a lot of them with pets. My last session of 2020 not only had a dog, this time I had a goat and a a couple of horses.
With all of this experience with animals I thought would share some tips on how to do a successful engagement session with your fur babies.

3 Tips for Successful Engagement Photos with Pets
1. Bring a Handler
If I was only able to give one tip to send you on your way this would be it. Bringing someone to care for your pet is, in my opinion, necessary. As much as you will want some pics with your pets you will also want some photos of just the two of you. Having someone to watch your pet allows you to do those photos with less distraction. It is best to use someone that has a pet of their own or is around your pet frequently. If you can’t find someone I highly suggest For the Love of Paws , which is a service that works with pets for weddings and sessions just like this.
2. Bring Food
Now I suggest a snack for the people in the photos because the sessions can take up to 2 hours, but with working with pets I highly suggest it. Even Scooby Doo needed a Scooby Snack to do his best. Having snacks helps the pet that doesn’t speak human languages to look in the right direction.
3. Use a Pet Friendly Location
The session featured on this blog was an ideal location for animals, but not every couple has (or wants) a farm at their disposal. I suggest outdoor locations are best whether it be a park, beach, or field. Cities can be distracting for the pet.
