Shelby and Oda’s Elizabeth Park Wedding Story
10 years into my photography career, I don’t have many firsts left. But Oda and Shelby’s Eliabeth Park wedding was a first for me. It was my very first wedding in the actual Rose Garden. I have done weddings at Pond House Cafe, and I have shot many many sessions there. One being their engagement session, but never a wedding.
If you read last week’s blog, you know that I was just at Elizabeth Park a week before the wedding. With any outdoor location, even though I was just there the park was very different to shoot. One it was cloudy all day, which is this photographer’s dream. It was the middle of the day, but since it was a wedding, we had a permit to politely tell people to leave in order to keep the wedding private.
I arrived to the park and waited for the couple to arrive for their private vows. That’s right, they arrived together. They never wanted a big wedding or a big to do. I loved that they stuck to what they wanted as a couple. The vows were beautiful and personal, and that carried out for the whole day.
Following the vows, we did couple photos throughout the park. The light was perfect everywhere even with the sun being blocked by thick clouds. This time was so nice because we were able to catch up from their engagement session. Essentially talking about our love for concerts and Beyoncé.
The family and close friends then met us in the rose garden to take some formal photos. The family was just as chill as the couple that day, which I have to admit is rare. I think with it being a small group and the knowledge of the couple’s wishes was what made it so. We met some more friends over at the bridge and did some more group photos there. We also did some photos in the spot I usually start with during a session at Elizabeth Park. Ending there made sense on this occasion because it is near the Pond House Cafe, which was where the rest of the day took place.
Their intimate ceremony in front of the Pond House ballroom fireplace was led by the officiant who’s energy made perfect sense for them. They had a lovely ceremony of their own hours earlier, but this was a great way to include those close to them. The people close to them felt included but it was still all about them.
They followed the ceremony with a cocktail hour and some more family photos. The first dance, the toast by her sister, and the quiet dinner gave a familiar wedding feel. As well as the cutting of the cake. The dancing was just having a good time with their family and friends. There were no line dances like The Wabble or The Electric Slide. Just singing and dancing Hot to Go with all their might.
