Eric and Megan’s Yale maternity session brought such a sense of nostalgia because it was shot a little over 2 years from their engagement session in the same location. Now if you have been following my blog or business for a while these two look really familiar… As I just mentioned, I shot their engagement session two years ago and their wedding last year.
I don’t normally shoot maternity sessions, even though my first paid session was a maternity session for a long-time friend. But seeing as Megan told me they would have me shoot their maternity session right after she received her wedding gallery I knew it was coming eventually. And to have it a little over a year from their big day was special.
Shooting at Yale is my favorite I have made that very much known on this blog. I love the architecture, the light, and the greenery. The only challenge is the New Haven crowds, especially on a beautiful Saturday. The day we shot was actually the beginning of orientation for Yale. Also since it’s a major city in Connecticut there was major construction, but thanks to my magic you cant tell.
I noticed our first location when I was walking to our meeting spot from my car. This spot had the best light of the shoot and it was a very quiet spot, which is where I like to start any shoot. Then we move to an opposite spot that had a concert and construction going on, but I love that spot of Yale so it was worth the risk.
We followed this spot with a spot where they did a piggy back shot for their enagement session, but since Megan is carrying a person already we did a maternity version. After that, I gave them an opritunity to sit on the theater steps for some sitting shots.
There is a photo that we love from their engagement session that I really wanted to recreate but unfortunately, there was a truck parked in front of the gate. I knew there was a similar spot near a wedding venue I had shot a couple of times this year so we headed there for our fifth location. Though the light and background are different the feel was that same.

During their enagement session Megan suggested getting ice cream because it is a part of their relationship, which is something I like to show during an engagement session. Since the ice cream place was closed when we did their session in 2020, we did it for this session. I may have also wanted to pick up some ice cream for myself to bring home too.
We took the Arethusa ice ream cones over to the town green and I shot them as Megan tried to keep her white dress clean, while trying to look cute while getting their picture taken. As they ate the sun dissapeared so this ended at the perfect time… We walked the same street back to our cars where we once talked about their wedding details to talking about nursery decorations.
